Regarding the redownloading: a quick mail to amazon support will usually fix that. Just say you lost the files and the download will be reenabled just a few minutes later.

Great article!

I installed Oneiric the day it was released, and was pretty pissed off to find that the Gnome 2 interface, now named "Gnome Shell" and hidden away deep in the Ubuntu Package Installer, is completely crippled and nothing like it's previous releases.

I decided to take a leap of faith and go with "Unity" as my default window manager. I think it took me about an hour before I felt like my PC was about to go out the window.

I then installed "normal" Gnome 3 from the package manager and switched to this. It felt completely weird all over again, but somehow, slightly less annoying. It has a few really useful UI enhancements over Unity that I hadn't realised I was using until I switched to my Netbook, which has XUbuntu installed (and obviously no Unity/Gnome).

On top of Gnome 3 I've added Docky, which satisfies my need for a "what the bloody hell is running" status at the bottom of my screen, although I'm finding myself using it less and less as I get used to Gnome 3.

So my message to the "haterz"...rather than writing it off as an "unholy mess" and give it a go - a proper go!

Thanks for the alternate method. Mine had worked fine for me until I tried to use it on my Ubuntu 11.10 beta 2 install. I'm a heavy banshee user these days so it just wasn't a big priority to find another work around and I've honestly not had the time. You also could take a look at pymazon if you haven't already. http://code.google.com/p/pymazon/

Hey Adam

It is fun to hear about what you have been up to since you left the team. I would never have thought you were a musician from your incredible talent in IT. I am in the same mindset as you...I love to create..and love learning new things which is why I switched teams...not nearly as ambitious as you but it has been really fun learning new things and technologies.

Your new path sounds really fun too. I know you will do great and it really is true that there are so many things to explore with a cello in music. I just saw a concert last night with one of the opening acts doing amazing things just on the piano and using techniques I had never really seen before (the guy is named elew) and he mixes all sorts of pop or rock with classical music and it is amazing. I also like apocalyptica..group of chelloists that do similar things and it just shows all the different musical avenues there are to explore. I hope you have a great time doing this and wish you success!

Hi Brad, great to hear from you! I tried some "stir fried cried pork" the other day which sounded pretty strange (it might have been a typo I guess) but wasn't actually very adventurous at all - it was tasty though. Eli tried some small baked spicy fishes in pandan leaves, and we have had some strange fruit juices too. But I think the durian ice cream tops all other experiences for me so far.

Great idea with the shoes question! We will start asking that ... Happy New Year!

Adam,

I got your blog from Eli's conversation today. It was great to hear from him on Christmas day. It sounds like you are enjoying your adventure, and I am glad there are 3 of you sharing this experience and fending for yourselves. The ornate centuries old Budda temples must be impressive, and the strange mix of jungle / urban and technology. We have a historic park here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Fayette, that lasted only one generation and is an "old"village iron smelting town that had it hey day in the 1880's. quite a different historical perspective. Keep us posted, and thanks for bringing your travel experience along for Eli and Cory. What is the most curious food you have tried so far? How long does the average person there have to work to be able to afford an average pair of shoes? i would say 3 to 4 hours here. My folks used to travel a lot and my dad always asked people that question to get a feel for the cost of living. I am sure you are good travelers and ambassadors.

Be curious and kind,

Brad (Eli's dad)

I think the shower works so good because it is one of the few moments where we are not distracted by anything. The water and usually closed eyes provide a relaxed meditation state, which make you open for ideas.
I also get ideas when I am doing endurance sports like cycling or running,
For me it also works when going clubbing, I guess the repetitive music and lights help to get me into a similar state. Any drink and all is for nothing though.
There also seems to be a rule that the further you are a way from pen and paper, the more ideas you will have.

I realise this is an old blog post, but it ranks quite high on google searches.

If you are still running that CT on a Linux box you have another option -- GoldenCheetah now supports Computrainer workouts with mrc/erg files. We're also working on internet racing.

Cheers,
Mark

It's funny!

Yesterday I was talking to my sister about this very same topic and Lauren was telling me that we all naturally feel lazy. But that you can tell your brain what you’d like to create for yourself and let your brain help you create it!

Which to me was my real Ah Ha! Moment. It maybe common sense to some but your mindsets really determine your actions and emotions towards your goals. Really powerful stuff.

She reccomends checking this out if your lookin for your own Ah Ha.

Hi Adam,
I've also got myTracks on my G1 phone. I'm wanting a way to do what you are doing but have it automated and show up as a Google Map on my WP site. Haven't found it yet but it should be possible.

cheers

Being a perfectionist is a problem but like any problem it has a solution. You can always improve your attitude towards things and people by accepting the fact that nothing in this world is fully right or fully wrong. Each person, thing or event has both a postive and negative aspect. What we need to do is focus on the positive aspect and accept the negative aspect the way it is. Definately we need to work on imroving the negative aspect but only as much as it is in our capacity. Rest we can leave as destiny.
